BELGOROD TRAGEDY: A missile strike by Ukraine on an apartment building in Belgorod has left at least seven people dead and 17 injured, according to Russian officials.
The devastating attack, described as one of the deadliest in the region of Belgorod, involved a barrage of Tochka ballistic missiles and Adler and RM-70 Vampire (MLRS) multiple launch rocket systems, Russian authorities reported. Shocking footage from the scene depicted approximately 10 stories of the building crumbling to the ground. As emergency responders rushed to the scene, the situation worsened when the roof collapsed, prompting frantic efforts to rescue survivors amidst a backdrop of dust and debris.
Russian President Vladimir Putin was briefed on the “barbaric” missile assault by the acting emergencies minister and the governor of the Belgorod region, Dmitry Peskov, Putin’s spokesperson, stated on Sunday. The Russian defense ministry labeled the incident a terrorist attack on residential areas, attributing the damage to fragments of a downed Tochka-U missile.
Reports from Russian news agencies confirmed the grim toll of seven fatalities and 17 injuries, including two children, with additional individuals feared trapped beneath the rubble.
In condemning the strike, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova characterized it as a deliberate assault on civilians, highlighting the culpability of Ukraine and its supporters, particularly the United States and European allies.
There has been no immediate response from Ukrainian authorities regarding the attack.
Meanwhile, on the Kharkiv front, Russian forces made significant advances following heavy shelling of the region, penetrating the border and reclaiming several villages from Ukrainian control. Over the weekend, Russian troops announced the capture of four additional villages—Hatyshche, Krasne, Morokhovets, and Oliinykove—in the Kharkiv region.
This strategic maneuver has compelled Ukraine to redeploy additional troops to the area, coinciding with Russian offensives in key sectors across the southern and eastern fronts.
Russian military analysts suggest that Russia’s numerical superiority on the battlefield has enabled them to exploit relatively vulnerable areas with swift, highly mobile units, effectively encircling Ukrainian positions.
Despite the challenging situation, Ukraine’s military chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, affirmed their resolve to repel the invaders, stating, “Units of the Defense Forces are engaged in fierce defensive battles, and attempts by the Russian invaders to breach our defenses have been thwarted.”
