Severe Weather Disrupts Travel and Causes Discomfort Across the UAE
Dubai, UAE – On Thursday, adverse weather conditions wreaked havoc across the United Arab Emirates (UAE), leading to flight cancellations, suspension of intercity bus services, and widespread inconvenience for residents and travelers alike.
Emirates, the flagship carrier of the UAE, announced the cancellation of several flights departing from Dubai International Airport (DXB) on May 2 due to the inclement weather. Destinations affected by these cancellations included Istanbul, Johannesburg, Nairobi, Cairo, Amman, and Singapore. Passengers scheduled to travel on these affected flights were urged to check the status of their bookings and make necessary arrangements. To accommodate affected travelers, Emirates waived rebooking fees and assured passengers that they would be accommodated on alternate flights.
In addition to flight disruptions, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) suspended intercity bus operations, compounding travel challenges for commuters.
The adverse weather conditions prompted Emirates to issue a statement advising customers traveling to or from DXB to expect delays as some flights were rescheduled. The airline encouraged passengers to check flight statuses on their website for updates and provided links for further information.
Flydubai, another prominent Dubai-based airline, echoed Emirates’ sentiments, urging travelers to allow extra time for their journeys to DXB and to update their contact details for flight notifications.
The inclement weather, characterized by heavy thunderstorms, also impacted road travel in Dubai, with potential delays anticipated for travelers heading to the airport. Authorities recommended commuters to factor in extra travel time and consider using the Dubai Metro as an alternative mode of transportation where feasible.
Residents across the UAE experienced a restless night as severe winds and heavy rain battered the nation during the early hours of Thursday. While there were no reports of flooding in Dubai South, strong winds caused minor damage, including fallen trees and billboards.
In preparation for the weather event, the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority assured readiness, while government agencies issued advisories and implemented precautionary measures. Notably, a tunnel on E611 was preemptively closed, and sandbags were strategically deployed in vulnerable areas to mitigate potential flood risks.
The impact of the adverse weather extended beyond transportation disruptions, with residents sharing their experiences of violent storms and heavy rain on social media platforms. Despite the inconvenience and discomfort caused by the weather event, proactive measures taken by authorities and heightened public awareness contributed to ensuring safety and minimizing risks across affected areas in the UAE.
