Long on Rhetoric, Short on Action: The OIC’s Challenge in Addressing Gaza Crisis

The Urgency for Action from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC)

The recent convening of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Banjul, the capital of the Gambia, has brought forth declarations that echo the sentiments of concern and solidarity for oppressed communities, particularly in Gaza and Kashmir. However, despite the vocal expressions, there remains a palpable gap between words and tangible actions.

The joint declaration issued by the OIC voiced apprehension over the ongoing crisis in Gaza, calling for an immediate ceasefire and urging global powers to intervene. The plight of the besieged enclave’s population was emphasized, with a plea for urgent humanitarian aid. Furthermore, the OIC reiterated its support for the Palestinian people’s right to establish a sovereign state with Al-Quds Al Sharif as its capital, and echoed concerns over the persecution of Muslims and minorities in India.

Yet, amidst these statements of intent, the OIC appears ineffective in halting the atrocities being committed. Remarkably, it was non-Muslim nations like South Africa and Nicaragua that took proactive steps through legal channels, invoking international law to address the genocidal actions in Gaza. While the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled against Nicaragua’s request for provisional measures, it did not dismiss the case entirely, indicating ongoing legal scrutiny.

However, the challenge lies in enforcement. Despite ICJ rulings, Israel continues its actions with impunity, bolstered by unwavering support from the United States. Even as some Latin American nations sever ties with Israel, many OIC members maintain diplomatic relations, failing to translate rhetoric into meaningful action.

If the OIC genuinely seeks to prevent further bloodshed in Gaza, it must go beyond symbolic gestures. Member states must consider concrete measures such as diplomatic and trade embargoes against Israel, akin to the oil embargo of the 1970s. While acknowledging potential economic repercussions, particularly amid existing global disruptions, the stakes of inaction are dire. Escalation in the Middle East could reverberate across global commodity markets, leading to unforeseen consequences.

Therefore, the onus lies on OIC leaders to prioritize collective action over individual interests. Meaningful intervention is imperative to deter Israel’s aggression in Gaza and the West Bank. As the world watches, the OIC has a pivotal role to play in shaping the trajectory of the conflict, underscoring the urgency for decisive steps towards peace and justice.
